Introduction to Otoplasty

Whether you’re looking to correct protruding ears, resize overly large ears, or fix misshapen ears caused by trauma or congenital conditions, otoplasty can help enhance your self-confidence. What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgery designed to correct structural abnormalities of the ears. This procedure creates a more natural appearance by reshaping, repositioning, or adjusting the ear’s size. Otoplasty does not affect the ability to hear but can significantly improve the aesthetic balance of your face.

Otoplasty can be customized to suit the unique needs of each patient. Here are the main types of otoplasty procedures:

Ear Pinning

Ear pinning is commonly recommended for individuals with excessively protruding ears. This surgery repositions the ears closer to the head by reshaping the cartilage, helping create a more balanced appearance.Ā

Ear Reduction

Ear reduction surgery removes tissue to reduce the size of the ears for individuals with large ears. This procedure is ideal for people with macrotia, where the ears are disproportionately large in comparison to the head.

Ear Augmentation

Ear augmentation corrects underdeveloped or misshapen ears. It may involve cartilage or tissue grafting to enhance the shape and size of the ear, particularly in cases of microtia, where the ear has not fully developed.

What to Expect on the Day of Otoplasty Surgery

On the day of your otoplasty in Washington, D.C., Dr. Chopra and his staff will receive you at Chopra Cosmetic Surgery and get you settled in the surgical suite. A member of the staff will review your surgical plan to ensure you are fully comfortable with proceeding. Once you are comfortable with the plan, a board-certified anesthetist will administer anesthesia. The procedure can be performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia.

Otoplasty is usually an outpatient surgery, meaning you can go home the same day. You will be given anesthesia, either general anesthesia (putting you to sleep) or local anesthesia with sedation (making you relaxed but awake).

The specific steps of the surgery depend on the type of otoplasty you’re having, but generally, the process includes making an incision behind or within the ear, reshaping or removing tissue to achieve the desired result, and finally, closing the incisions with stitches.

On average, an otoplasty can take between one and two hours to complete without complications.

Otoplasty Recovery

After surgery, you will wear a dressing to protect your ears. You may experience some swelling, bruising, or discomfort, but these symptoms typically improve within a few weeks. Full recovery usually takes 6-8 weeks. During recovery, it’s important to:

  • Avoid touching your ears
  • Lie on your back to avoid putting pressure on the ears
  • Wear button-up shirts to avoid pulling clothes over your head

Consult with Dr. Chopra before attempting any athletic or precarious activities that may affect the healing process.
